50 Housing Solutions Launched in European Parliament

On December 11th 2019, Housing Solutions Platform launched its new publication, 50 Out-of-the-Box Housing Solutions to Homelessness and Housing Exclusion, in the European Parliament. The event was hosted by Katrin Langensiepen MEP. What follows is a brief summary of the three event panels.

Panel 1: Welcome

Chair: Freek Spinnewijn, Director at FEANTSA

The audience was welcomed by Freek Spinnewijn, director of FEANTSA. This was followed by an opening statement by host MEP Katrin Langensiepen, and a presentation of the report given by Clotilde Clark-Foulquier, who headed its overall coordination.


The remaining panelists were then invited to give their remarks. These were Matt Carthy MEP (GUE/NGL) as well as Björn Mallants from the partner organisation Housing Europe and representatives from the Y-Foundation and the King Baudoin Foundation, who both supported the project.

Panel 2: Working Together: Examples of Innovative Cooperation for Housing Solutions

Chair: Prof. Dr. Sergio Nasarre-Aznar, UNESCO Chair of Housing

The second panel was a deep-dive into the publication as each of the panelists represented one of the selected projects. Chaired by Professor Nasarre-Aznar of Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona - whose own project on shared and temporal ownership is also included in the publication - the panelists presented their projects as part of two topics.


The first topic concerned the important role that cities play in addressing homelessness, and included presentations by the City of Helsinki on their housing advice service and by the Municipality of Odense on their housing guarantee for the homeless.

The second topic was about matching housing needs and social needs, with presentations from the following projects:

Panel 3: From Local Action to European Policies, How Do We Address Unmet Housing Needs?

Chair: Ruth Owen, FEANTSA Policy Coordinator

The third and final panel discussed how unmet housing needs can be addressed, from the local all the way to the European level. Ricardo Barranco from the Joint Research Council presented some key takeaways from their recent Future of Cities Report, followed by remarks from Katarina Ivankovic-Knezevic from DG Empl and Michael Newey, Chief Executive of Broadland Housing and one of the steering group members behind the publication.


The event was wrapped up by concluding remarks from FEANTSA Director Freek Spinnewijn and Housing Europe Director Sorcha Edwards.
